We recorded the majority of this album in one room, with mostly live instruments playing all at once, and let the Holy Spirit move through the way we played together. Our shared experiences and friendship comes through in the music as we listen and lean on each other for when to dynamically build the songs, giving them more of a live sounding, worshipful, natural, and authentic feel. There was no AI used in the making of this album (songwriting, recording, lyrics, or artwork) - just real instruments, experienced worship musicians and songwriters, real microphones and guitar amps providing an organic sound that fills the empty spaces. To me this is what makes music special and human, the real breath heard before the vocal line begins, the quiet hiss of the tubes glowing in my Mesa Nomad 55 amplifier, the ambient sounds and the vibe that only comes from music being played together in a roomful of close friends.
Every other album we've recorded has primarily been minor key songs, but this album is full of uplifting praise songs. Our last kickstarter album "His Death Overcame" (which was fully funded in 2022, thank you!) was an acoustic album filled with primarily laments. In contrast, we started writing and recording many of the songs on this new album with the intention of using them for corporate worship at churches. They are intended to keep our focus upward, on God's blessings and goodness in our lives during every season of life. The album is filled with lyrics of praise and thanksgiving that are meant to remind us of God's goodness, mercy, and faithfulness, just like many of the songs in the book of Psalms. In fact, the lyrics from the title track "This I Know" pull directly from scripture in Psalm 23:
"Lead me beside still waters, come restore my soul. Goodness and love will follow, everywhere I go... this I know."
Recorded at Wally Cleaver's Recording Studio in Fredericksburg, VA by experienced sound engineer, musician, and friend Jeff Covert, we strived for something that felt slightly less polished and in your face, and more natural and real sounding. Jeff is a longtime friend of ours who allowed us to be ourselves and really enjoy the recording process which I think comes through in the entire recording. Jeff even graciously contributed some of his talented guitar playing and keyboard skills on two of the songs.
All proceeds from this kickstarter go directly into funding the digital distribution, mixing, mastering, and making of the album and rewards. Without your help, we can't make the music we love using professional engineering studios and mastering experts. To raise the quality of the music there is a cost, and to digitally distribute the album across all of the platforms (i.e. Apple Music and Spotify) there is a cost. Your donations go directly towards this and make it possible for us to continue to write and record songs that will hopefully impact many listeners in a personal way. Our hope is to bring a light to the darkness by pointing to Christ and what He has done for us, that others may discover the incredible peace and joy that only comes from knowing Him.
The artwork we've created for this album is meant to capture the wonder of how incredibly big God is, how vast and beautiful His creation is, and the faith required to take a step towards Him and the plans He has for our lives. The text is in all lower case to represent that while "this I know" is a statement, there is faith and humility required in the journey.
